I am Roger Melo

A photographer based in Kagoshima City, Kyushu, Japan, where I have lived for the past 14 years. My photography journey began in Canada, where I studied both photography and the history of art. From the very beginning, I was drawn to the power of photography as a way to stop time and document the human condition — a way to preserve life’s fleeting moments with honesty and depth.

During my studies, I developed a deep passion for black and white photography and the documentary style. For me, this approach strips away distraction, revealing life as it truly is. It allows the viewer to focus not on color, but on form, light, shadows, and the emotions of the moment.

When I arrived in Japan, I immediately fell in love with its culture, landscapes, and the rhythm of its society. These elements became central to my work. Over the years, I have applied my artistic principles to capture everyday life, traditions, and natural beauty in ways that reflect both the spirit of Japan and my personal perspective. After 14 years of documenting this country, I decided it was time to share my work more widely, with the hope that others can experience Japan through my eyes.

My photography is available in traditional forms, such as framed prints and digital copies, but I also believe art should transcend the confines of the wall. That is why I have expanded into wearable art — creating T-shirts printed with my photographs. In this way, my work can be viewed not only in a home or gallery but also carried into daily life, allowing people to wear and share the art they connect with.

Ultimately, my work is about connection — between people and moments, between the past and the present, and between the viewers and the world around them. Through my photographs, I invite you to pause, reflect, and see the beauty of life as it unfolds.
